How to evaluate websites

Before using a website as a source,

you need to see if it passes the CRAAP test!

Ask yourself: "does this site have...?"

Currency: is the information current?

  • When was the article/webpage published or posted?
  • Does the article/webpage even have a date?
  • Are all the links working? When was the last webpage update?

Relevance: is the information relevant to your paper?

  • Is the article/webpage related to your research?
  • Is the article/webpage from the correct type of source as required by the assignment? Do you need a journal or newspaper article?

Accuracy: how do you know the information is accurate?

  • Does the site allow anyone to edit it? Is it a blog?
  • Does the author offer any evidence for their claims?
  • Do they quote others or credible sources?
  • Does the site have errors or misspellings?

Authority: who exactly is providing this information?

  •  Is there an author? Or is it “Anonymous” or a screenname?
  • Who is the author? If it’s a medical article, does she have a degree?
  • Is the author trained in this area?
  • Does the website offer any contact information, an address?

Purpose: what is the purpose of this information?

  • Why was this article written? Was it to sell you something?
  • Does the author tell you the purpose?
  • Does the article provide: facts, an opinion or propaganda?
